ABOUT US

Bechtelsberg Galloway are Johannes, Anna and Horst.

We report on experiences, findings and views on the topics of breeding, husbandry and marketing. Through many meetings and encounters with beginners and other colleagues, we recognized the need for advice and support in problem solving.

The button “Info PRO Galloway” contains reports from science and research, other media and best practices in meat marketing.

True to our motto: think outside the box, be open to new things and keep the economic side in mind - not to be an opinion leader, but a networker.

OUR MOUNTAIN

Between Vogelsberg in the south, the Knüllgebirge in the north, the Schwalmaue to the west and the Fuldaaue further to the east, our local mountain and namesake of the Bechtelsberg Galloway herd rises at 472 m. Rumpelskuppe, a name that may give a clue to the origins of the mountain. Because the Bechtelsberg is part of the North Hesse volcanic mountain range. When the African and European continents collided about 15 million years ago and the Alps rose, the European plate broke up in several places. Cracks and fractures allowed liquid magma to rise and Europe's largest volcano and its foothills emerged. For a million years, the warm, humid climate in the Tertiary era weathered the new mountains, as well as the red sandstone around them. The later ice ages did the rest to transform today's gentle landscape with its hills and valleys. The typical colorful poor meadows have existed up here since the Middle Ages at the latest. Our type of sustainable management ensures that these valuable, species-rich meadows with flowers, butterflies and orchids are preserved for our grandchildren. Galloways help to preserve the open, largely intact cultural landscape with meadows and pastures and its fascinating diversity of animals, insects and plants, which have settled here over centuries in partnership with rural agriculture. These precious things need our care: meadow grasses want to be eaten and grass that is never mowed becomes matted and impoverished in the desired variety. In 1984 the first Galloways came to our newly acquired Bornwiese on the southern slope of the Bechtelsberg. Cool spring water from the cracks and underground chambers of the volcanic rock all year round, fresh, clean air and many hours of sunshine ensure optimal conditions for the growth of our vital and good-natured extensive cattle. The lovable animals always find natural protection and shade in the groups of trees and under the oldest trees in the district.
